Side-Lying Hip Flexor

The side-lying hip flexor stretch lengthens the muscles at the front of the hip while lying on one side. It primarily targets the hip flexors and upper legs, and can support hip mobility and comfortable movement during lower-body training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Lie on one side with your head supported and your body in a comfortable straight line.
  2. Bend the upper knee and reach behind to hold the ankle or lower leg of that same side.
  3. Gently draw the heel toward your buttock while keeping the upper thigh slightly behind your body.
  4. Keep your pelvis steady and lightly tighten your abdominal muscles; do not arch your lower back or twist forward.
  5. Hold the gentle stretch at the front of the hip and thigh, breathe slowly, then release and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a gentle pull: the sensation should be a mild stretch, not sharp pain or pinching.
  2. Keep the thigh back: allowing the knee to drift far forward reduces the stretch at the front of the hip.
  3. Breathe steadily: relax into the position rather than forcing a larger range of motion.
