World's Greatest Stretch

World's Greatest Stretch is a dynamic mobility drill that combines a deep lunge, hamstring stretch, hip opening, and thoracic rotation. It primarily improves mobility through the hips and upper legs while also involving the glutes, back, and shoulders. It is useful in warm-ups for strength training, running, and general movement preparation.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start standing with your feet about hip-width apart, then step your right foot forward into a long lunge.
  2. Lower your hips under control and place both hands on the floor inside your right foot. Keep the back leg long and the heel lifted.
  3. Bring your right elbow toward your right instep without forcing the range of motion. Keep your hips level and your spine long.
  4. Place your right hand back on the floor, then rotate your chest to the right and reach your right arm toward the ceiling. Let your eyes follow your hand if comfortable.
  5. Return the hand to the floor, shift your hips back to straighten the front leg for a gentle hamstring stretch, then return to the lunge. Repeat for controlled repetitions before switching sides.

Technique tips

  1. Move slowly and use only a comfortable range; this drill should feel like active mobility, not a forced stretch.
  2. Keep the front foot flat and the front knee tracking in line with the toes rather than collapsing inward.
  3. Rotate through the upper back during the reach instead of twisting aggressively through the lower back.
