Band Squat

The resistance band squat is a lower-body squat performed while standing on a resistance band and holding it at shoulder level. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes, with support from the hamstrings and core. It helps build lower-body strength, squat control, and muscular endurance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the band: Stand with both feet on the center of a resistance band, about hip- to shoulder-width apart. Bring the ends of the band up to shoulder height and hold them securely.
  2. Find your starting position: Stand tall with your chest up, ribs stacked over your pelvis, and feet planted evenly. Keep your hands close to your shoulders and your elbows slightly forward.
  3. Lower under control: Bend at the hips and knees together, sitting down between your feet. Keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your toes and maintain a neutral spine.
  4. Reach a comfortable depth: Lower only as far as you can while keeping your heels down, torso controlled, and knees aligned. Do not let the band pull you forward.
  5. Stand back up: Press through your whole feet to extend your knees and hips, exhaling as you rise. Finish tall without forcefully leaning back, then repeat with control.

Technique tips

  1. Choose manageable tension: Use a band that lets you keep the same form from the first repetition to the last.
  2. Keep pressure through the whole foot: Avoid shifting onto your toes or letting your heels lift as you descend.
  3. Control the band: Keep the band secure at shoulder level and move smoothly; do not bounce out of the bottom position.
