Kettlebell One-Arm Split Snatch

The kettlebell one-arm split snatch is an explosive lift in which a kettlebell is driven from a swing into a locked-out overhead position while catching in a split stance. It primarily develops the shoulders, glutes, legs, and posterior chain, while demanding core stability, coordination, and power. It supports total-body strength, athletic explosiveness, and overhead control.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand over the kettlebell with feet about hip-width apart. Hinge at the hips, keep your spine neutral, and grip the handle with one hand.
  2. Build the swing: Hike the kettlebell back between your legs, then drive through the floor by extending your hips and knees. Keep the bell close to your body as it rises.
  3. Pull under and split: As the kettlebell reaches chest height, guide it close to the body and punch your arm overhead. Simultaneously move into a split stance with both knees softly bent.
  4. Stabilize and recover: Lock the elbow, keep the wrist neutral, and ensure the kettlebell is balanced over the shoulder. Recover from the split under control, then lower the bell safely into the next swing before repeating or changing sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use hip power: The upward drive comes primarily from forceful hip extension, not from pulling the kettlebell with the arm.
  2. Keep the bell close: A close path helps prevent the kettlebell from pulling the shoulder forward and reduces impact on the forearm.
  3. Choose a manageable load: Learn the swing, one-arm snatch, and split receiving position separately before using a heavier kettlebell.
  4. Control the catch: Land quietly with the torso upright and the front knee tracking in line with the toes.
