Kettlebell One-Arm Clean and Jerk

The kettlebell one-arm clean and jerk is a full-body lift that brings a kettlebell to the rack position before driving it overhead with one arm. It primarily develops the shoulders while strongly involving the glutes, legs, back, and core. This exercise supports overhead strength, power, coordination, and work capacity.

Instructions

  1. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart, with the kettlebell on the floor slightly in front of you. Hinge at the hips, keep your back neutral, and grip the handle with one hand.
  2. Hike the kettlebell back between your legs, then drive through your feet and hips to guide it upward. Keep it close to your body and rotate your hand around the handle into the rack position, with the bell resting against the forearm and upper arm.
  3. Pause in the rack with your wrist neutral, elbow close to the ribs, torso tall, and free arm out for balance. Brace your core and keep your eyes forward.
  4. Make a short, controlled dip by bending the knees, then drive forcefully through the legs. Use the momentum to send the kettlebell overhead as you straighten the arm and body.
  5. Finish with the kettlebell stacked over the shoulder, a locked elbow, and ribs held down. Lower it under control back to the rack, then return it safely to the floor or begin the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Use hip power, not an arm pull. The clean should be driven by a hip snap, with the kettlebell staying close to your body.
  2. Let the bell roll around the hand. Avoid casting it over the wrist, which can cause the bell to strike the forearm.
  3. Keep the overhead position stable. Do not lean back or flare the ribs; reduce the load if you cannot lock out smoothly.
  4. Start light and practice both sides. Build clean rack and overhead-control skills before adding weight or volume.
