Kettlebell Bent Press

The kettlebell bent press is a unilateral overhead strength exercise in which you bend and rotate under a kettlebell held overhead. It primarily develops the shoulders while challenging the obliques, back, hips, and total-body stability. It supports overhead strength, shoulder control, mobility, and coordination.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Clean a kettlebell to the rack position on one side, with your wrist neutral and elbow close to your body.
  2. Press first: Press the kettlebell overhead until the elbow is locked, keeping the shoulder packed and the weight balanced over the shoulder.
  3. Create a stable stance: Turn the feet slightly away from the loaded side and shift most of your weight toward the unloaded leg.
  4. Bend under the weight: Keep the loaded arm vertical as you hinge at the hips, bend sideways away from the kettlebell, and rotate your torso slightly.
  5. Reach the bottom: Continue moving your body under the kettlebell until your free hand can touch or approach the floor, without bending the loaded elbow.
  6. Return with control: Drive through the feet and hips to stand tall while keeping the kettlebell overhead, then lower it safely to the rack. Repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the kettlebell stacked: The bell should stay nearly motionless above the shoulder; move your body around and under it.
  2. Use a light load first: This lift demands shoulder stability, thoracic mobility, hip control, and coordination before heavier loading.
  3. Do not force depth: Only bend as far as you can maintain a locked elbow, stable shoulder, and controlled spinal position.
  4. Breathe deliberately: Brace before descending, then breathe calmly while maintaining tension and control.
