Kettlebell One-Arm Snatch

The kettlebell one-arm snatch is an explosive full-body lift in which a kettlebell travels from a swing between the legs to an overhead locked-out position using one arm. It primarily develops the shoulders and also trains the glutes, legs, back, core, grip, power, and coordination. It can support strength, explosive conditioning, and overhead stability.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart, with the kettlebell on the floor slightly in front of you. Hinge at the hips, keep your back neutral, and grip the handle with one hand.
  2. Hike the kettlebell back: Pull it back between your thighs as if hiking a football. Keep the working shoulder packed and the free arm out of the kettlebell's path.
  3. Drive with the hips: Forcefully extend your hips and knees to propel the kettlebell upward. Let the arm guide the bell rather than pulling it with the shoulder.
  4. Insert the hand: As the kettlebell rises, keep it close to your body and smoothly rotate your hand around the handle so the bell settles softly on the outside of the forearm.
  5. Lock out and return: Finish tall with the arm straight overhead, wrist neutral, and ribs down. Lower the bell under control into the swing, then repeat before switching sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use hip power: The upward drive should come primarily from a sharp hip extension, not from curling or pressing the kettlebell.
  2. Keep it close: Guide the kettlebell close to the body and insert the hand around the handle to avoid banging the forearm.
  3. Control the overhead position: Do not finish with an excessively arched lower back; brace the core and keep the wrist stacked over the shoulder.
  4. Choose an appropriate load: Learn the swing and a stable overhead lockout with a light kettlebell before increasing weight or volume.
