Kettlebell Halo

The kettlebell halo is a controlled shoulder-mobility and core-stability exercise in which a kettlebell is circled around the head. It primarily develops the shoulders while engaging the upper back, arms, and trunk to keep the torso steady. It can support shoulder warm-ups, overhead control, and upper-body coordination.

Instructions

  1. Choose a light kettlebell that you can move smoothly without straining your shoulders or neck.
  2. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, soften the knees, brace the abdomen, and hold the kettlebell by the horns at chest height with the bottom of the bell facing upward.
  3. Move the kettlebell around your head slowly, keeping it close to the head without touching it. Let one hand guide the handle as the other hand receives it behind the head.
  4. Keep your ribs down, neck long, and torso facing forward; avoid leaning, twisting, or arching the lower back as the bell travels.
  5. Complete the chosen repetitions in one direction, then reverse the circle for an equal number of controlled repetitions.
  6. Finish under control by bringing the kettlebell back to chest height. Stop if you feel sharp pain, pinching, or loss of control.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize control over load. A lighter kettlebell allows a smooth hand-to-hand transfer and better shoulder positioning.
  2. Keep the bell’s path close to the head, but do not rush it or let it strike the neck, shoulders, or head.
  3. Brace before each circle and exhale gently as the bell passes behind the head to help prevent rib flare and lower-back arching.
  4. Use a comfortable, pain-free range of motion; reduce the bell weight or range if the shoulders feel pinched.
