Lateral Stretch

The standing lateral stretch is a gentle side-bending mobility exercise. It primarily lengthens the obliques and muscles along the side of the torso, with support from the back and shoulders. It can help improve trunk mobility and is useful in warm-ups, cool-downs, and general flexibility routines.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and arms relaxed.
  2. Raise one arm overhead with the palm facing inward; keep the opposite arm by your side.
  3. Brace gently through your abdomen and keep both feet planted evenly on the floor.
  4. Lean slowly toward the side of the lowered arm without twisting your chest or pushing the hips far out.
  5. Hold and breathe comfortably, then return to upright with control and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Move only to a gentle stretch; do not force a deeper side bend.
  2. Keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis to avoid turning the movement into a backbend.
  3. Breathe steadily and avoid holding your breath while stretching.
  4. Use a smaller range if you feel pinching, sharp discomfort, or loss of balance.
