Side-Lying Floor Stretch

The Side-Lying Floor Stretch is a gentle static stretch performed while lying on one side and lengthening the upper arm overhead. It primarily targets the obliques and side of the torso, with involvement from the lats and shoulders. It can support mobility, relaxation, and comfortable overhead reaching.

Instructions

  1. Lie on one side on a comfortable floor surface with your legs gently bent and stacked.
  2. Rest your lower arm in a comfortable position and extend your upper arm overhead, keeping the elbow soft.
  3. Lengthen through the side body by reaching the upper hand away from the hips without forcing the shoulder.
  4. Keep your hips stacked, ribs relaxed, and neck long; avoid rolling your chest strongly toward the floor or ceiling.
  5. Breathe slowly and hold a mild, comfortable stretch, then release gradually and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use gentle tension: seek a mild pull along the side of the body, never sharp pain or numbness.
  2. Do not shrug: keep the upper shoulder away from the ear as you reach overhead.
  3. Stay symmetrical: spend similar time on each side and exit the position slowly.
