Kneeling Side Bend

The kneeling side bend is a controlled lateral trunk movement performed while kneeling upright. It primarily stretches and mobilizes the obliques and sides of the torso while requiring the hips and core to stabilize the position. It can support trunk mobility, posture awareness, and a warm-up or cool-down routine.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start tall on both knees on a comfortable surface, with the knees about hip-width apart and the hips stacked over the knees.
  2. Brace gently through the core, keep the pelvis level, and place one hand along the outside of the thigh while raising the opposite arm overhead.
  3. Exhale and bend slowly to the side toward the lowered hand, reaching the overhead arm in the same direction without leaning forward or rotating the chest.
  4. Pause briefly at a comfortable stretch through the side of the torso; keep both knees grounded and avoid shifting the hips sideways.
  5. Inhale to return upright with control, then repeat on the other side for balanced mobility.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the hips stacked over the knees so the movement comes from lateral trunk motion rather than hip shifting.
  2. Use a comfortable range; aim for a gentle side stretch, not a forced bend or sharp sensation.
  3. Keep the chest facing forward and avoid collapsing, twisting, or holding your breath.
