Long Jump

The long jump is a track-and-field event in which you sprint along a runway, take off from one foot, and land in a sand pit. It develops lower-body power, sprint coordination, balance, and jumping technique, with strong involvement from the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and calves. It supports explosive athletic performance and horizontal jumping ability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Warm up with easy running, dynamic leg movements, and several progressive accelerations before jumping.
  2. Begin a controlled approach run, gradually building speed while keeping your posture tall and your steps consistent.
  3. Approach the takeoff board with a quick, active final step and place your takeoff foot firmly beneath your body without reaching forward.
  4. Drive the opposite knee and both arms upward as you push forcefully through the takeoff foot, directing the jump forward rather than excessively upward.
  5. In the air, keep your body controlled and bring both legs forward for landing.
  6. Land with both feet together in the sand, bend your knees and hips to absorb force, and continue forward so you do not fall backward.

Technique tips

  1. Use a repeatable approach. Mark and practice a run-up length that lets you reach the board under control.
  2. Do not overstride before takeoff. Reaching for the board can reduce speed and place extra stress on the leg.
  3. Build intensity gradually. Practice shorter run-ups and lower-speed jumps before using a full approach.
  4. Check the landing area. Use a clear, properly prepared sand pit and avoid jumping when the surface is unsafe.
