Cable Crunch

The cable crunch is a kneeling trunk-flexion exercise performed using a high pulley cable. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis, with the obliques assisting to stabilize the torso. It supports abdominal strength and controlled spinal flexion with adjustable resistance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable machine to a high pulley and attach a rope handle. Select a light load first.
  2. Kneel facing the machine about an arm’s length away. Hold the rope ends beside your head, with your hands staying near your temples or ears.
  3. Brace your abdomen and keep your hips stacked over your knees. Start tall with a neutral neck and a slight bend in the hips.
  4. Exhale as you curl your ribs toward your pelvis, flexing through the torso rather than pulling the rope down with your arms.
  5. Pause briefly in the shortened position while keeping the hips mostly still and the neck relaxed.
  6. Inhale and return slowly until your torso is tall again, maintaining tension without letting the weight stack slam.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the rope position fixed: your hands hold the rope in place; they should not turn the movement into an arm pulldown.
  2. Use a manageable load: reduce the weight if you must drive the hips backward or use momentum to curl down.
  3. Move through the torso: think of bringing the rib cage toward the pelvis while avoiding excessive neck flexion.
  4. Control both phases: curl down smoothly and resist the cable on the return rather than allowing the stack to pull you upright.
