Decline Bench Cable Crunch

The decline bench cable crunch is a weighted abdominal flexion exercise performed on a decline bench while holding a cable attachment. It primarily targets the rectus abdominis and helps build abdominal strength and control through a loaded range of motion.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the bench and cable. Position a decline bench facing a low cable pulley and attach a rope or suitable handle. Select a light load that you can control without pulling your body out of position.
  2. Secure your position. Lie face up on the bench with your feet firmly anchored under the pads. Hold the attachment near the sides of your head or upper chest, keeping your wrists neutral.
  3. Brace at the start. Keep your hips and lower back in contact with the bench, gently draw your ribs down, and begin with your torso slightly extended without forcing your lower back.
  4. Crunch upward. Exhale as you flex through your upper body, bringing your rib cage toward your pelvis. Keep the cable close and let the abdominals move the torso rather than pulling mainly with the arms.
  5. Return with control. Inhale as you slowly lower until your abdominals are comfortably lengthened. Do not let the weight stack slam, then repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. If the cable pulls your hips off the bench or makes you use your arms, reduce the weight.
  2. Think ribs to pelvis. Focus on curling the torso rather than simply bending at the hips.
  3. Control both directions. Use a smooth lowering phase and keep tension in the abdominals; do not let the stack crash.
  4. Keep the neck relaxed. The attachment should not pull on your neck; keep your head in line with your torso.
