Rotational Step-Up

The rotational step-up is a step-up variation performed on a stable platform while adding a controlled turn at the top. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging balance, coordination, and lower-body control. It can support functional leg strength and single-leg stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a stable step platform at a height that lets you step up without losing control. Stand facing it with your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Place one entire foot firmly on the platform, keeping the knee aligned over the toes and the torso tall.
  3. Press through the foot on the platform to stand up. As you reach the top, turn in a controlled manner toward the stepping-leg side while keeping the pelvis and knee stable.
  4. Return to face the platform, then step down slowly under control. Alternate sides or complete the planned repetitions on one side before switching.

Technique tips

  1. Use a low platform first until you can control the step and turn without wobbling.
  2. Keep the working knee tracking in the same direction as the toes; do not let it collapse inward during the step or rotation.
  3. Move smoothly and avoid using a forceful push from the trailing foot. Stop if the platform shifts or your balance is lost.
