Dumbbell Bicep Curl Step-Up

The dumbbell bicep curl step-up combines a step-up onto a platform with a dumbbell bicep curl. It primarily trains the quadriceps, while the glutes and biceps contribute to the movement. It can support lower-body strength, coordination, balance, and arm strength.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a stable step platform at a height that lets you step up with control. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with palms facing forward.
  2. Stand tall facing the platform with your feet about hip-width apart. Brace your trunk and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Place one whole foot firmly on the center of the platform. Push through that foot to step up, keeping the knee aligned with the toes.
  4. As you rise, curl both dumbbells toward your shoulders without swinging your torso or letting your elbows drift forward.
  5. Lower the dumbbells under control as you step back down with the trailing foot, then return the lead foot to the floor.
  6. Complete the planned repetitions and switch the leading leg evenly. Stop if you cannot keep the platform stable or control your balance.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load so the curl does not pull you forward or disrupt the step-up.
  2. Keep the working foot fully supported on the platform; avoid pushing hard from the toes of the floor foot.
  3. Exhale as you step up and curl, then inhale as you lower with control.
  4. Use a lower platform or lighter dumbbells if your knee alignment, posture, or balance changes.
