Side-Lying Quadricep Stretch

The side-lying quadriceps stretch is a static stretch performed while lying on one side and drawing the top heel toward the buttock. It primarily lengthens the quadriceps at the front of the thigh and can also encourage a controlled hip position. It supports lower-body mobility, flexibility, and recovery after leg-focused activity.

Instructions

  1. Lie on one side with your head supported comfortably and your hips stacked one above the other.
  2. Bend the knee of the upper leg and take hold of that ankle or foot with the hand on the same side.
  3. Gently draw your heel toward your buttock until you feel a mild stretch across the front of the thigh.
  4. Keep the knees close together, lightly brace the abdomen, and avoid arching the lower back or rolling the pelvis backward.
  5. Hold the position while breathing steadily, then release slowly and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use gentle tension: stretching should feel mild to moderate, never sharp or painful.
  2. Keep the pelvis neutral: avoid pulling the leg so far that the lower back arches or the top hip rolls backward.
  3. Do not force the ankle: hold the foot or ankle comfortably and release the stretch if the knee feels painful.
