Spoto Press

The barbell Spoto press is a bench press variation in which the bar pauses just above the chest without resting on it. It primarily trains the chest, triceps, and shoulders while reinforcing bar control, tension, and pressing strength through the bottom range. It can support stronger and more consistent bench pressing technique.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a barbell in a rack over a flat bench and use a load you can control; set safety arms or use a competent spotter when available.
  2. Lie with your eyes under the bar, feet firmly on the floor, and shoulder blades pulled back and down. Grip the bar evenly with wrists stacked over your forearms.
  3. Unrack the bar and hold it above the shoulders with straight but not hyperextended elbows. Brace your trunk and keep your upper back tight.
  4. Lower the bar under control toward the lower chest, keeping the elbows at a comfortable angle from the torso.
  5. Stop the bar just above the chest without touching or resting it there. Hold the position briefly while keeping the body and bar stable.
  6. Press the bar upward and slightly back toward the rack path, exhaling as you pass the difficult portion. Finish with control, then rerack securely.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the pause consistent: stop at the same small distance above the chest on every repetition.
  2. Use less weight than for a normal touch-and-go bench press; the unsupported pause substantially increases control demands.
  3. Keep the bar motionless during the pause rather than allowing it to sink, bounce, or drift toward the face.
  4. Maintain firm foot pressure, a braced torso, and retracted shoulder blades throughout the set.
