Stability Ball Hip Rotation

The Stability Ball Hip Rotation is a core-control exercise performed lying on your back with your lower legs supported on a stability ball. You rotate the ball and hips from side to side while resisting unwanted movement through the torso. It primarily trains the obliques and abdominal muscles, supporting core stability, coordination, and controlled rotational strength.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Lie on your back with your arms extended out to the sides, palms on the floor. Place both lower legs on top of a stability ball and bend your knees about 90 degrees.
  2. Brace: Gently tighten your abdominal muscles, keep your shoulders on the floor, and maintain a neutral neck position.
  3. Rotate: Slowly roll the ball to one side by rotating your hips and lowering both knees together. Keep the movement controlled and keep both shoulders in contact with the floor.
  4. Return: Use your abdominal muscles to bring the ball and knees back to the center without bouncing or twisting abruptly.
  5. Repeat: Rotate to the opposite side in the same controlled manner. Use a smaller range of motion if you cannot keep your shoulders down or control the ball.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize control: Move slowly in both directions; the stability ball should not roll suddenly or uncontrollably.
  2. Keep shoulders grounded: Do not allow the upper back or shoulders to lift as the knees move sideways.
  3. Match range to control: Only lower the knees as far as you can while maintaining abdominal tension and a comfortable, controlled motion.
