Stability Ball Side Crunch

The stability ball side crunch is an abdominal exercise performed with the side of the torso supported on a stability ball. It primarily trains the obliques through controlled lateral flexion while the trunk and hips work to maintain position. It can help develop core strength, lateral trunk control, and abdominal endurance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Place a stability ball on a non-slip surface and lie with one side of your waist and lower ribs supported on it. Keep both feet firmly on the floor, staggered or braced against a wall if needed.
  2. Align your body: Stack your shoulders and hips, keep your neck long, and place your hands lightly behind your head or cross your arms over your chest. Do not pull on your neck.
  3. Crunch sideways: Exhale and contract the obliques to lift your upper torso laterally away from the ball. Keep the movement small, controlled, and in the side of the waist rather than rotating forward.
  4. Return with control: Inhale as you slowly lower until you feel a comfortable stretch along the side of the torso. Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch sides while maintaining stable foot contact.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the ball stable: Use a clear, non-slip area and arrange your feet wide enough to prevent the ball from rolling.
  2. Avoid neck tension: Keep space between your chin and chest and let the obliques, not your hands, lift the torso.
  3. Control the range: Do not force a deep stretch or use momentum; stop if you cannot keep your hips and feet stable.
