Stability Ball Trunk Rotation

Stability Ball Trunk Rotation is a controlled seated torso-rotation exercise performed while balancing on a stability ball. It primarily trains the obliques and other abdominal muscles while challenging seated balance and core control. It can support core endurance, rotational control, and posture awareness.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit tall near the center of a properly inflated stability ball with both feet flat on the floor, about hip-width apart.
  2. Find a stable position: Stack your head over your ribs and hips, keep your chest lifted, and gently brace your abdominal muscles. Hold your arms in front of your chest with your hands together.
  3. Rotate smoothly: Exhale and turn your rib cage and shoulders to one side in a comfortable range while keeping your hips facing forward and both feet grounded.
  4. Return with control: Inhale as you return to center without bouncing or shifting excessively on the ball.
  5. Repeat evenly: Rotate to the other side and continue with slow, controlled repetitions. Stop if you lose balance or feel sharp discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the pelvis quiet: Rotate from the rib cage rather than swinging your knees or hips from side to side.
  2. Use a small range first: Only rotate as far as you can maintain a tall spine and steady contact through both feet.
  3. Move slowly: Avoid momentum, bouncing, and sudden end-range twisting.
  4. Choose the right ball size: When seated, aim for hips at about knee height or slightly higher for better control.
