Stability Ball Wall Squat

The stability ball wall squat is a lower-body squat performed with a stability ball between your back and a wall. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while the ball supports a more upright squat path. It can help build leg strength, improve squat control, and develop confidence with the squat pattern.

Instructions

  1. Place a stability ball against a solid wall and stand with it supporting the middle of your back; keep your feet about hip-width apart and slightly forward of your hips.
  2. Lean gently into the ball, brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and look straight ahead.
  3. Inhale and bend your knees and hips to slide down the wall, allowing the ball to roll with your back.
  4. Lower only as far as you can while keeping your knees tracking in line with your toes, your heels down, and your back supported by the ball.
  5. Exhale and press through your mid-foot and heels to stand, extending the knees and hips without forcefully locking the knees.

Technique tips

  1. Set your foot position first: feet that are too close to the wall can make the knees travel excessively forward.
  2. Keep even pressure through both feet and avoid letting the knees collapse inward.
  3. Use a controlled descent and ascent; do not bounce at the bottom or let the ball slide out of position.
  4. Choose a comfortable depth and stop if you feel sharp pain in the knees, hips, or back.
