Dumbbell Plie Squat

The dumbbell plié squat is a wide-stance squat performed with the toes turned outward while holding one dumbbell securely in front of the body. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes, with assistance from the adductors and calves. It supports lower-body strength, squat control, and hip mobility.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with your feet wider than hip width and turn your toes outward in line with your knees.
  2. Hold the dumbbell: Grip one end of a dumbbell with both hands and hold it vertically in front of your chest, keeping it close to your body.
  3. Lower: Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and bend your knees to lower your hips between your legs under control.
  4. Maintain alignment: Keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your toes and maintain a neutral back without collapsing the chest.
  5. Stand: Press through your whole feet to extend the knees and hips, squeezing the glutes as you return to standing. Repeat smoothly.

Technique tips

  1. Choose your stance: Use a width and toe angle that let your knees track comfortably over your toes.
  2. Control the load: Keep the dumbbell close to your chest and use a weight that allows an upright torso throughout the set.
  3. Use full-foot pressure: Avoid shifting onto the toes or lifting the heels as you rise.
  4. Breathe steadily: Inhale on the descent and exhale as you stand, while keeping your trunk braced.
