Dumbbell Lunge

The dumbbell lunge is a lower-body strength exercise performed by stepping into a lunge while holding dumbbells at the sides. It primarily trains the quadriceps and also works the glutes and hamstrings while challenging balance and leg coordination. It supports lower-body strength, muscular development, and single-leg control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding one dumbbell in each hand at your sides with your arms long.
  2. Brace your torso, keep your chest lifted, and take a controlled step forward with one foot.
  3. Lower into the lunge by bending both knees until the rear knee is close to the floor and the front thigh is near parallel to the floor.
  4. Keep alignment: the front knee should track in line with the toes, the front heel should stay down, and the torso should remain upright.
  5. Push through the front foot to return to standing, then repeat with the other leg. Use a load that lets you control every repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Use a stable stride. A very short step can drive the front knee too far forward, while an overly long step can make balance difficult.
  2. Control the descent. Lower smoothly rather than dropping into the bottom position.
  3. Keep the dumbbells quiet. Let them hang close to your sides without swinging or leaning toward either side.
  4. Breathe steadily. Inhale as you lower and exhale as you push back to standing.
