Band Cross-Over

The resistance band crossover is a standing chest isolation exercise in which the hands sweep forward and slightly across the body against bands anchored behind you. It primarily trains the chest, with the front shoulders and triceps assisting. It can support chest muscle development and pressing strength while requiring controlled shoulder movement.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Anchor the bands securely behind you at about shoulder height, then hold one handle in each hand and face away from the anchor.
  2. Take a staggered, stable stance and step forward until the bands have light tension. Keep your chest lifted, ribs controlled, and a soft bend in both elbows.
  3. Begin with your arms opened out and slightly behind your torso only as far as your shoulders remain comfortable. Keep your palms facing forward or slightly inward.
  4. Exhale and sweep the hands forward in a wide arc, bringing them together and slightly across the body at chest height.
  5. Pause briefly while squeezing your chest without shrugging your shoulders or locking the elbows.
  6. Inhale and return slowly to the starting position under control. Keep the torso still and repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Use a secure anchor. Check the band, handles, and anchor point before every set; a loose anchor can snap toward you.
  2. Keep a small, fixed bend in the elbows. Turning the movement into a press reduces the chest-isolation focus.
  3. Control the return. Do not let the bands pull your arms abruptly backward or allow the shoulders to roll forward.
  4. Use a resistance that lets you keep your torso still; reduce tension if you must lean, twist, or use momentum.
