Band External Rotation

Resistance Band External Rotation is a shoulder-stability exercise performed by rotating the forearm outward against an anchored elastic band while keeping the upper arm close to the torso. It primarily trains the rotator cuff, especially the infraspinatus and teres minor, with support from the rear shoulder. It can help develop shoulder control and balanced upper-body strength.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Anchor the band at about elbow height and stand sideways to the anchor, holding the band in the hand farthest from it.
  2. Set your position with feet hip-width apart, a tall torso, and the working elbow bent about 90 degrees and lightly pressed against your side.
  3. Begin with the forearm across the front of your abdomen and create light tension in the band without twisting your torso.
  4. Rotate outward by moving the forearm away from your abdomen while keeping the elbow fixed at your side and the wrist neutral.
  5. Pause briefly at a comfortable end range, keeping the shoulder down and the ribs from flaring.
  6. Return slowly to the start under control. Complete all repetitions, then perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use light resistance. Choose a band that lets you move smoothly without shifting your torso or shoulder.
  2. Keep the elbow anchored. Place a small towel between the elbow and ribs if it helps you avoid letting the elbow drift away.
  3. Control both directions. Do not let the band pull your arm inward quickly; return at a steady pace.
  4. Stay in a comfortable range. Avoid forcing the arm farther back or working through sharp pain.
