Dumbbell Step-Up

The dumbbell step-up is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed by stepping onto a stable bench or platform while holding dumbbells. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes, with support from the calves and core for balance. It can help develop leg strength, single-leg control, and everyday stair-climbing capacity.

Instructions

  1. Set up a stable bench or platform at a height that allows you to step up with control. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Stand tall facing the bench with your feet about hip-width apart, chest up, and core gently braced.
  3. Place one whole foot firmly on the center of the bench. Keep the knee aligned with the toes.
  4. Drive through the heel of the foot on the bench to stand fully on top, bringing the trailing leg up without pushing hard off the floor.
  5. Lower the trailing foot to the floor under control, then step down with the working foot. Complete the desired repetitions before switching sides.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable height: use a lower platform if you cannot keep the pelvis level or control the descent.
  2. Avoid pushing off: the lower foot should provide minimal assistance; let the leg on the bench do the work.
  3. Keep the dumbbells close to your sides and avoid leaning far forward or rounding your back.
  4. Use a controlled tempo, especially on the way down, and reduce the load if knee alignment is difficult to maintain.
