Barbell Romanian Deadlift

The barbell Romanian deadlift is a hip-hinge strength exercise performed by lowering a barbell with a controlled bend at the hips and standing back up. It primarily trains the hamstrings and glutes while the lower back and upper back stabilize the spine and bar. It supports posterior-chain strength, hip-hinge technique, and muscular development.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand with feet about hip-width apart and hold a barbell in front of your thighs with an overhand grip. Keep your arms straight and the bar close to your body.
  2. Brace: Soften your knees, tighten your abdominal muscles, and set your shoulders down and back while keeping a neutral spine.
  3. Hinge down: Push your hips straight back and lower the bar along your thighs and shins. Keep the bar close, your chest open, and your knees only slightly bent.
  4. Use a controlled range: Lower until you feel a strong hamstring stretch while your back remains neutral; do not force the bar to the floor.
  5. Stand up: Drive your feet into the floor and extend your hips to return to standing. Finish tall by squeezing your glutes without leaning backward.
  6. Repeat safely: Keep every repetition smooth and controlled. Stop the set if you cannot maintain a neutral spine or keep the bar close.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize the hip hinge: Think of moving your hips backward rather than squatting down; your shin angle should change very little.
  2. Keep the bar close: Let the bar lightly track along the legs to reduce unnecessary stress on the lower back.
  3. Choose the load carefully: Start light enough to control the lowering phase and maintain a neutral spine throughout the set.
  4. Breathe and brace: Take a breath and tighten your trunk before each repetition, then exhale as you stand tall.
