Kettlebell Romanian Deadlift

The kettlebell Romanian deadlift is a hip-hinge exercise performed by lowering a kettlebell with a controlled bend at the hips and then driving the hips forward to stand. It primarily trains the hamstrings and glutes, while the back and abdominal muscles stabilize the torso. It supports posterior-chain strength, hip-hinge technique, and general lower-body strength.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart and place a kettlebell on the floor between your feet. Brace your abdomen and keep your chest open.
  2. Grip the kettlebell: Push your hips back, bend your knees slightly, and grasp the handle with both hands. Keep your spine neutral and shoulders pulled away from your ears.
  3. Lift: Press through your feet and extend your hips to stand upright, keeping the kettlebell close to your body. Finish tall without leaning backward.
  4. Lower with a hip hinge: Inhale, soften the knees, and send the hips straight back as the kettlebell travels close to your legs. Keep your back neutral and your arms long.
  5. Return and repeat: Lower only until you feel a strong hamstring stretch without losing spinal position, then exhale and drive the hips forward to stand. Set the kettlebell down with control when the set is complete.

Technique tips

  1. Hinge, do not squat: Let the hips travel back while the knees bend only slightly.
  2. Keep the load close: Keep the kettlebell near your legs throughout the movement to reduce unnecessary strain on the lower back.
  3. Use a controlled range: Stop the descent when hamstring tension is strong or before your back rounds.
  4. Choose an appropriate load: Start light enough to maintain a neutral spine and steady control on every repetition.
