Barbell Romanian Deadlift From Deficit

The barbell Romanian deadlift from deficit is a hip-hinge exercise performed while standing on a raised platform, allowing the bar to travel farther below the feet. It primarily trains the hamstrings and glutes, with the back working to maintain a stable torso. It supports posterior-chain strength, hip-hinge control, and mobility through a controlled range of motion.

Instructions

  1. Set up a stable raised platform and place a barbell in front of it. Stand on the platform with feet about hip-width apart and the bar over the midfoot.
  2. Grip the bar with straight arms and hands just outside the legs. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest long, and unlock the knees slightly.
  3. Hinge at the hips by sending them backward as the bar travels close to the legs. Keep a neutral spine and lower only as far as you can without rounding your back or losing balance.
  4. Stand tall by driving through the feet and extending the hips. Squeeze the glutes at the top without leaning backward, then repeat with control.

Technique tips

  1. Use a conservative load. The added range from the deficit increases the demand on hamstring length and spinal control.
  2. Keep the bar close. Letting it drift forward increases stress on the lower back and makes balance harder.
  3. Do not chase depth. End the descent when the pelvis or spine can no longer stay controlled, even if the plates have not reached their lowest possible point.
