Kettlebell Dead Clean

The kettlebell dead clean is an explosive hip-hinge movement performed from a dead stop on the floor, bringing the kettlebell into the front-rack position. It primarily trains the hamstrings and glutes while also developing upper-back, shoulder, grip, and hip-power qualities. It supports strength, power, and coordination training.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Place one kettlebell on the floor between your feet. Stand with feet about hip-width apart, hinge at the hips, and grip the handle with one hand while keeping your spine neutral.
  2. Create tension: Pack the shoulder, brace your abdomen, and pull the kettlebell slightly toward you to remove slack before it leaves the floor.
  3. Drive and clean: Push the floor away and extend your hips powerfully. Keep the kettlebell close to your body, then guide your hand around the handle as it rises rather than letting it swing or flip onto the forearm.
  4. Receive and reset: Catch the kettlebell softly in the front-rack position with the wrist neutral and elbow close to the ribs. Lower it under control to the floor, let it come to a complete stop, and repeat; perform the same work on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use hip power, not an arm pull: The hip extension should initiate the upward movement; the arm mainly guides the kettlebell.
  2. Keep it close: A close path reduces strain and helps the kettlebell settle quietly into the rack rather than striking the forearm.
  3. Respect the dead stop: Let the kettlebell settle fully on the floor before each repetition; do not turn it into a continuous swing clean.
  4. Choose a manageable load: Use a weight that allows a neutral spine and a controlled rack position on every repetition.
