Dumbbell Single-Leg Calf Raise

The dumbbell single-leg calf raise is a unilateral standing exercise in which you raise your heel while holding a dumbbell. It primarily trains the calf muscles and challenges ankle strength, balance, and lower-leg control. It can support calf development and improve stability for walking, running, and jumping activities.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Hold a dumbbell securely at your side and stand tall on one foot, with the other foot lifted clear of the floor.
  2. Find balance: Keep the working knee softly bent, brace your torso, and use a light touch on a stable support if needed.
  3. Rise: Press through the ball of the working foot and raise your heel as high as comfortably possible without rolling the ankle outward or inward.
  4. Pause: Briefly squeeze the calf at the top while keeping your hips level and torso upright.
  5. Lower with control: Slowly lower the heel until the foot is flat on the floor, then repeat for the desired repetitions before changing sides.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize range of motion: Use a controlled heel rise and lower rather than bouncing through short repetitions.
  2. Keep the ankle aligned: Maintain pressure through the ball of the foot and avoid rolling onto the outer edge of the foot.
  3. Choose the load carefully: Use a dumbbell that lets you stay balanced and control the lowering phase on every repetition.
  4. Use support appropriately: A light hand on a stable object can improve balance without taking the work away from the calf.
