Dumbbell Preacher Curl Stability Ball

The dumbbell stability ball preacher curl is an isolation exercise in which the upper arm is supported against a stability ball while the elbow flexes to lift a dumbbell. It primarily targets the biceps and helps develop controlled elbow-flexion strength while reducing momentum.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Place a properly inflated stability ball on a non-slip surface and position yourself so one upper arm can rest firmly against the ball.
  2. Start position: Hold a dumbbell with a supinated palm, extend the arm down the front of the ball, and keep the shoulder relaxed and the elbow supported.
  3. Curl up: Exhale as you bend the elbow and curl the dumbbell toward the shoulder without lifting the upper arm away from the ball.
  4. Pause and lower: Briefly squeeze the biceps at the top, then inhale and lower the dumbbell slowly until the elbow is nearly straight.
  5. Repeat with control: Complete the desired repetitions, then switch arms if training both sides. Keep the ball stable and stop if you cannot maintain secure support.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first: Choose a dumbbell that allows a slow lowering phase without shifting the ball or twisting the wrist.
  2. Keep the upper arm planted: Do not let the elbow travel forward or the shoulder roll upward to finish the curl.
  3. Control the full range: Avoid snapping the elbow straight at the bottom and avoid swinging through the first part of the lift.
  4. Stay stable: Use a non-slip surface and reposition the ball before continuing if it moves during a repetition.
