Dumbbell Rotational Curl

The dumbbell rotational curl is a biceps curl in which the forearms rotate from a neutral grip toward a palm-up position as the weights are lifted. It primarily trains the biceps and also involves the forearms. It supports arm strength and muscle development while practicing controlled elbow flexion and forearm rotation.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell at each side with a neutral grip and arms fully extended.
  2. Brace your torso, keep your chest lifted, and keep your elbows close to your ribs without moving them forward.
  3. Curl both dumbbells upward in a smooth arc. As the weights rise, rotate your forearms so your palms gradually face upward.
  4. Pause near the top when the dumbbells approach shoulder level, squeezing the biceps without lifting the shoulders or bending the wrists.
  5. Lower under control while rotating back to the neutral grip, returning to straight arms without snapping the elbows.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. The rotation should be smooth and pain-free; reduce the weight if you need to twist the torso or swing the dumbbells.
  2. Keep the upper arms quiet. Let the elbows act as the pivot rather than driving them forward to lift the weight.
  3. Control the lowering phase. Lower slowly and complete the return to a neutral grip instead of dropping the dumbbells.
  4. Keep wrists aligned. Maintain a straight, neutral wrist rather than curling the hands toward the forearms.
