Dumbbell Seated Bicep Curl

The dumbbell seated bicep curl is an isolation exercise performed while seated, curling dumbbells toward the shoulders. It primarily trains the biceps, with assistance from the forearms. The seated position helps limit body momentum and supports focused arm-strength and muscle-building work.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit upright on a bench with a dumbbell in each hand, feet flat on the floor, and arms hanging beside your thighs.
  2. Start position: Keep your chest lifted, shoulders down, elbows close to your sides, and palms facing forward.
  3. Curl: Exhale and bend your elbows to raise both dumbbells toward your shoulders without moving your upper arms forward.
  4. Squeeze: Pause briefly near the top while keeping your wrists straight and your shoulders relaxed.
  5. Lower with control: Inhale and slowly return the dumbbells to the starting position until your elbows are nearly straight. Do not drop the weight or swing your torso.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load: Use dumbbells you can lift without leaning back or lifting your elbows away from your sides.
  2. Control the lowering phase: Lower each repetition slowly rather than letting gravity take over.
  3. Keep wrists neutral: Avoid bending the wrists back or forward, and stop if the movement causes sharp pain.
