Calf Machine Shoulder Shrug

The calf machine shoulder shrug uses the shoulder pads of a calf-raise machine to perform loaded shoulder elevation. It primarily trains the upper trapezius, with the forearms assisting in holding the handles. This exercise can support upper-back strength and trap development while providing a stable machine-based setup.

Instructions

  1. Set the load to a manageable weight and adjust the calf machine so the shoulder pads rest comfortably across the tops of your shoulders.
  2. Stand under the pads with your feet stable, knees softly bent, torso upright, and hands holding the machine handles.
  3. Release the machine safety mechanism if present, then let your shoulders settle into a controlled lowered position without rounding your upper back.
  4. Raise your shoulders straight upward toward your ears by contracting your upper traps; keep your elbows straight and do not roll the shoulders.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower your shoulders slowly under control. Re-engage the safety mechanism before stepping away.

Technique tips

  1. Use a vertical path: lift and lower the shoulders straight up and down rather than rolling them.
  2. Keep your neck neutral and avoid pushing your head forward as the load rises.
  3. Control the weight throughout the lowering phase; reduce the load if you must use momentum or bend your elbows.
