Leverage Machine Shrug

The leverage machine shrug is a resistance exercise in which you elevate your shoulders against a machine’s handles or pads. It primarily trains the upper trapezius and supports upper-back strength, shoulder-girdle control, and muscular development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the machine so the handles or pads can be reached with your arms nearly straight and your shoulders in a relaxed starting position.
  2. Load a manageable weight, stand or sit as the machine is designed for, and brace your torso with your feet firmly supported.
  3. Grip the handles securely, keep your chest tall, neck neutral, and arms straight without locking the elbows forcefully.
  4. Raise your shoulders straight upward by contracting the upper trapezius; avoid rolling the shoulders forward or backward.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower slowly under control until your shoulders return to the starting position. Repeat without bouncing.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the motion vertical. Shoulder rolls do not improve the shrug and can make the movement less controlled.
  2. Use a load that permits a brief pause at the top and a slow, complete lowering phase.
  3. Keep your neck long and neutral. Do not thrust your head forward as the shoulders rise.
  4. Exhale as you lift, inhale as you lower, and stop if the machine setup causes pinching or pain.
