Smith Machine Shrug

The Smith Machine Shrug is a standing loaded shrug performed with a Smith machine bar. It primarily trains the upper trapezius and supports upper-back and shoulder-girdle strength with a stable, guided bar path.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar around mid-thigh height and load it evenly; use a light weight first to check the bar path.
  2. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, facing the bar, and hold it with straight arms using an overhand grip just outside your thighs.
  3. Unrack the bar and brace your abdomen. Keep your chest lifted, neck neutral, and elbows straight.
  4. Exhale as you raise both shoulders straight up toward your ears, squeezing the upper trapezius without bending the elbows.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower the shoulders to a comfortable stretched position while maintaining control.
  6. Complete the set without rolling the shoulders or leaning backward, then rack the bar securely before releasing it.

Technique tips

  1. Move vertically: think of lifting your shoulders straight up and down rather than rolling them in circles.
  2. Use a load you can lower slowly; avoid bouncing at the bottom or using momentum from the legs.
  3. Keep the head aligned with the torso and avoid jutting the chin forward as the shoulders rise.
