Cable Shrug

The cable shrug is an isolation exercise performed by elevating the shoulders against cable resistance. It primarily trains the upper trapezius, with the forearms assisting grip and control. It supports upper-back strength, shoulder-girdle control, and trapezius development.

Instructions

  1. Set the cable: Attach a straight bar or paired handles to a low cable pulley and select a manageable load.
  2. Take your position: Stand tall facing the pulley, feet about hip-width apart, and hold the attachment with straight arms and an overhand grip.
  3. Create tension: Step back until the cable is taut. Keep your chest lifted, neck neutral, and shoulders directly over your hips.
  4. Shrug upward: Exhale and raise both shoulders straight toward your ears without bending your elbows or rolling the shoulders.
  5. Pause and lower: Briefly squeeze the upper traps, then inhale and lower the shoulders slowly until they are controlled and fully depressed.
  6. Repeat with control: Keep your torso still throughout; reduce the load if you need to lean, jerk, or bend the arms.

Technique tips

  1. Move vertically: Think of lifting the shoulders straight up and down; shoulder rolling does not improve the exercise.
  2. Keep the neck relaxed: Do not force the head forward or downward as the shoulders rise.
  3. Use a controlled load: A moderate load and a deliberate lowering phase are more useful than momentum.
  4. Maintain straight arms: Bending the elbows shifts work away from the intended shrugging action.
