Dumbbell Prone Incline Shrug

The dumbbell prone incline shrug is a chest-supported shrug performed face down on an incline bench while holding dumbbells. It primarily trains the trapezius and upper back, with the shoulders assisting in scapular control. It can support upper-back strength and posture-focused resistance training.

Instructions

  1. Set an incline bench to a moderate angle and place a dumbbell on each side. Choose a load that allows smooth, controlled shoulder movement.
  2. Lie prone with your chest supported on the bench, feet planted securely, and your head in a neutral position.
  3. Hold the dumbbells with straight arms hanging toward the floor and a neutral grip. Let the shoulders settle without rounding your upper back.
  4. Raise your shoulders toward your ears by elevating the shoulder blades. Keep the elbows straight and avoid pulling the dumbbells with your arms.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower the shoulders slowly to a comfortable stretched position. Repeat without swinging or jerking.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the chest supported throughout the set so the upper traps, rather than momentum, drive the movement.
  2. Use a vertical shrug toward the ears; avoid rolling the shoulders forward or backward.
  3. Control the lowering phase and reduce the load if you cannot keep the arms straight or the neck relaxed.
