Dumbbell Shoulder Shrug

The dumbbell shoulder shrug is a standing strength exercise in which you raise and lower the shoulders while holding dumbbells at your sides. It primarily trains the upper trapezius, with the forearms supporting the grip. It can help develop upper-back and shoulder-girdle strength and muscular size.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with your palms facing inward.
  2. Set your posture by keeping your chest comfortably lifted, neck long, arms straight, and abdomen gently braced.
  3. Raise your shoulders straight upward toward your ears in a controlled motion. Keep the dumbbells close to your sides and do not bend your elbows.
  4. Pause briefly at the top while squeezing the upper trapezius without pushing your head forward.
  5. Lower slowly until your shoulders return to a relaxed, neutral position, then repeat for the planned repetitions.
  6. Use controlled loading; avoid rolling the shoulders or using momentum, and stop if the movement causes sharp pain.

Technique tips

  1. Move vertically: think about lifting the shoulders straight up and down rather than rolling them in circles.
  2. Keep your neck neutral: do not jut the chin forward or forcefully press the head down as you shrug.
  3. Control the descent: lower through the full comfortable range instead of dropping the dumbbells quickly.
  4. Match the load to your grip: choose dumbbells you can hold securely without leaning, swinging, or losing posture.
