High-Intensity Interval Run

High-Intensity Interval Running alternates short, hard running efforts with easier recovery periods. It primarily develops cardiovascular fitness, speed, and running endurance while also challenging the legs and glutes. It can support conditioning and performance goals when intensity and recovery are progressed gradually.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Warm up with 5–10 minutes of easy jogging and gradually increase your range of motion with dynamic movements.
  2. Choose a clear, level running route and begin with an easy recovery jog.
  3. Run a short work interval at a hard but controlled effort, keeping your torso tall, gaze forward, and arms relaxed.
  4. Slow to an easy jog or walk for recovery until your breathing is controlled enough for the next effort.
  5. Repeat the work and recovery intervals at a sustainable quality; stop if your form becomes unstable or you feel sharp pain.
  6. Finish with easy jogging or walking to cool down.

Technique tips

  1. Start conservatively. Use hard efforts you can repeat with consistent running form rather than sprinting all-out.
  2. Keep strides quick and controlled. Avoid overstriding or leaning excessively backward as fatigue rises.
  3. Respect recovery. Easy intervals should allow breathing and posture to settle before the next hard effort.
  4. Increase total hard running time gradually across sessions, not all at once.
