Tempo Run

A tempo run is a continuous run performed at a comfortably hard, controlled pace, typically after an easy warm-up. It develops aerobic endurance, running economy, and the ability to sustain a faster pace, with the legs and cardiovascular system doing most of the work. Tempo running supports race preparation and general endurance fitness.

Instructions

  1. Warm up with 10–15 minutes of easy jogging, then gradually increase your pace until your body feels ready.
  2. Choose a safe, mostly flat route or treadmill setting where you can run continuously without frequent stops.
  3. Settle into a comfortably hard, controlled pace: breathing should be strong but rhythmic, and you should be able to say only short phrases.
  4. Run tall with a slight forward lean from the ankles, relaxed shoulders, and quick, light steps. Keep your effort steady rather than sprinting early.
  5. When the planned tempo portion is complete, slow to an easy jog or walk and cool down for several minutes.

Technique tips

  1. Use effort, not only pace. Heat, hills, wind, and fatigue can change a suitable tempo pace; keep the effort controlled.
  2. Do not race the workout. Starting too fast usually turns the run into an unsustainable hard effort.
  3. Keep your jaw, hands, and shoulders relaxed to avoid wasting energy.
  4. If your form breaks down or you feel sharp pain, reduce the pace or stop and walk.
