Side Step-Up

The side step-up is a lower-body exercise performed by stepping sideways onto a stable platform and standing tall. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging single-leg control and hip stability. It supports leg strength, balance, and everyday stair-climbing ability.

Instructions

  1. Set up a stable step platform beside you. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, with the working leg closest to the platform.
  2. Place the entire foot of the working leg on the center of the platform, keeping the knee aligned with the toes.
  3. Drive through the foot on the platform to rise up. Keep your torso tall and bring the other foot onto the platform without pushing strongly from the floor.
  4. Step down with control to the starting position, then complete the desired repetitions before changing sides. Use a platform height that allows smooth, stable movement.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the knee tracking over the toes; do not allow it to collapse inward as you rise or lower.
  2. Use the platform leg to do most of the work instead of pushing off hard with the trailing foot.
  3. Control the descent and keep the platform stable. Lower the platform height if you cannot maintain balance or alignment.
