Smith Machine Toe Raise

The Smith Machine Toe Raise is a standing calf exercise performed under the guided bar of a Smith machine. Rising onto the balls of the feet primarily trains the calves, especially the gastrocnemius, while the fixed bar path helps control balance and loading. It supports calf strength and lower-leg muscle development.

Instructions

  1. Set the bar at about shoulder height and choose a light load. Stand beneath it with the bar resting securely across the upper back, not the neck.
  2. Set your stance with feet about hip-width apart and the balls of both feet firmly on the floor. Unlock the Smith bar and keep the knees softly bent.
  3. Rise smoothly by pressing through the balls of the feet until the heels are as high as comfortably possible. Keep the torso tall and the bar over the mid-foot.
  4. Lower under control until the heels return to the floor, then repeat without bouncing. Re-rack the bar securely before stepping away.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled tempo: pause briefly at the top and lower slowly rather than bouncing through repetitions.
  2. Keep pressure even across the balls of the feet; do not let the ankles roll inward or outward.
  3. Start conservatively and add load only when you can keep a full, comfortable range of motion and stable posture.
