Star Jump

The star jump is an explosive bodyweight jump in which you spring upward and spread the arms and legs into a star shape. It primarily trains the quadriceps, glutes, and calves while challenging coordination and cardiovascular conditioning. It can support lower-body power, athletic explosiveness, and high-intensity conditioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up on a clear, non-slip surface with feet about hip-width apart, chest lifted, and arms by your sides.
  2. Prepare by bending the hips and knees slightly, keeping the knees aligned with the toes and the torso braced.
  3. Jump explosively upward, driving through the feet while spreading the arms and legs wide to make a star shape in the air.
  4. Land softly on the balls of the feet and then the whole foot, bending the hips and knees to absorb the landing with the knees tracking over the toes.
  5. Reset and repeat with controlled landings; stop if you cannot maintain a quiet, balanced landing.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize the landing: land quietly with bent knees rather than locking the legs or collapsing inward.
  2. Use a manageable height: jump only as high as you can control from takeoff through landing.
  3. Keep the rhythm controlled: breathe steadily and take rest before landing quality deteriorates.
