Dumbbell Lateral Lunge with Bicep Curl

The dumbbell lateral lunge with bicep curl combines a side lunge with a standing dumbbell curl. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while adding focused work for the biceps, supporting lower-body strength, coordination, and full-body training efficiency.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with palms facing inward.
  2. Step sideways: Take a controlled, wide step to one side. Keep the other leg straight, with both feet pointing generally forward.
  3. Lower into the lunge: Bend the stepping knee and sit the hips back over that leg. Keep your chest lifted, back neutral, and the bent knee tracking in line with the toes.
  4. Return and curl: Push through the foot of the bent leg to return to standing. Once balanced upright, curl both dumbbells toward your shoulders while keeping your elbows close to your ribs.
  5. Reset: Lower the dumbbells under control to your sides, then repeat on the other side. Alternate sides evenly and stop if you cannot control knee or trunk position.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Choose dumbbells that let you complete both the lunge and curl without swinging or leaning.
  2. Keep the working foot grounded: Maintain contact through the heel and midfoot of the lunging leg as you stand back up.
  3. Separate the phases: Finish returning to a stable standing position before beginning the curl; do not curl while rising from the lunge.
  4. Control the range: Only lower as far as you can while keeping the knee aligned and the spine neutral.
