Dumbbell Lunge Tricep Extension

The dumbbell lunge triceps extension combines a lunge with an overhead dumbbell triceps extension. It primarily trains the quadriceps while also challenging the glutes and triceps. The exercise can support lower-body strength, arm strength, balance, and whole-body coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall holding one dumbbell vertically with both hands overhead. Keep your upper arms close to your ears, elbows bent, and feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step into the lunge: Take a controlled step forward and lower until both knees are bent comfortably. Keep the front knee tracking in line with the toes and the torso upright.
  3. Extend the arms: While stable at the bottom of the lunge, straighten the elbows to raise the dumbbell overhead. Keep the upper arms relatively still and avoid arching the lower back.
  4. Return with control: Bend the elbows to lower the dumbbell behind the head, then press through the front foot to return to standing.
  5. Repeat evenly: Complete the desired repetitions, then lead with the other leg. Use a light dumbbell until balance and arm control are reliable.

Technique tips

  1. Choose control over load: Use a dumbbell light enough to keep the torso tall and the elbows controlled throughout each repetition.
  2. Protect the knee: Do not let the front knee collapse inward; keep it aligned with the middle toes.
  3. Brace the trunk: Gently tighten the abdominal muscles before lowering to limit lower-back arching during the overhead extension.
  4. Move smoothly: Avoid rushing the lunge or snapping the elbows straight; lower and rise under control.
