Dumbbell Single-Leg Squat

The dumbbell single-leg squat is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed by squatting on one leg while holding a dumbbell. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging balance, hip stability, and core control. It supports leg strength, coordination, and reducing strength differences between sides.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall on one foot with the dumbbell held close to your chest or at your side. Keep the other leg lifted slightly in front of you and brace your core.
  2. Find balance: Keep the planted foot flat and let the knee track in the same direction as the toes.
  3. Lower with control: Push the hips back and bend the working knee, lowering only as far as you can while keeping your torso controlled and heel down.
  4. Stand up: Press through the middle of the foot and heel to return to standing, extending the hip and knee without snapping the knee straight.
  5. Repeat evenly: Complete the desired repetitions with control, then switch legs. Use a lighter dumbbell or a shorter range of motion if balance limits form.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: Balance and depth should be controlled before increasing dumbbell load.
  2. Keep the knee aligned: Do not allow the working knee to collapse inward.
  3. Use a pain-free range: Reduce depth if you cannot keep the heel down or torso steady.
  4. Breathe steadily: Inhale as you lower and exhale as you stand.
