Dumbbell Incline Bench Curl

The dumbbell incline bench curl is a biceps isolation exercise performed while seated against an inclined bench. The arm position increases the stretch on the biceps at the bottom of each repetition while the forearms assist the curl. It supports biceps strength, muscle development, and controlled elbow-flexion training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set an incline bench to a moderate angle and sit with your back, head, and shoulders supported against the pad.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your arms hanging behind the line of your torso, palms facing forward, and keep your feet firmly on the floor.
  3. Exhale and curl both dumbbells toward your shoulders by bending the elbows. Keep your upper arms still and your wrists neutral.
  4. Pause briefly near the top without allowing the elbows to travel forward or the shoulders to rise.
  5. Inhale and lower the dumbbells slowly until the elbows are nearly straight and the biceps are comfortably stretched.
  6. Repeat with a controlled range of motion; stop the set if you cannot keep your back against the bench or control the lowering phase.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. The stretched bottom position can make this curl feel harder than standing curls.
  2. Keep the elbows back. Moving them forward shifts work away from the intended position and often turns the repetition into a shoulder movement.
  3. Control the descent. Lower smoothly rather than dropping the dumbbells into the stretched position.
  4. Keep the wrists straight and avoid swinging, bouncing, or arching away from the bench.
